Road to Glory: Planning the 2027 Women's FIFA World Cup

Single Delegate Medium Specialized Committee

worldcup@uclamun.org

Committee Summary

The World Cup is undoubtedly one of the largest events across the globe. After seeing a 29% increase in attendance from the 2019 to 2023 Women’s World Cup, it is clear that we are at a crucial crossroad in planning the next FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027. With the tournament only 4 years away, FIFA has yet to decide on perhaps the most crucial aspect of the event, choosing a host nation. While hosting a World Cup is already a large task for host nations, recent events regarding worker conditions, host city populace displacement, and infrastructure costs has the selection process under even more scrutiny. FIFA will be looking to learn from its mistakes.

When planning a spectacle like the World Cup, there are many different things delegates must consider and address. With the rise in popularity of Women’s soccer, combined with the fight for equal pay among female athletes; negotiating TV rights, advertisements, and athlete rights will all be imperative sub-topics to address in order to ensure a successful event. Additionally, it is equally important for delegates to focus on the logistics behind planning a mega-event, such as economic burdens, transportation systems, and overall fan experience.

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

Thank you all for coming to LAMUN XIX. My name is Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri, a second-year Physiological Science major who is also on the pre-med track, and I am excited to be your chair for Behind The Scenes: Planning the Women's FIFA World Cup 2027.

Coming from the Los Angeles area, I first joined Model UN in 9th grade and have loved the social element of it ever since. To me, Model UN is the perfect combination of learning about pertinent world issues while also learning how to most effectively work with others. As your chair, I hope to garner a captivating debate environment filled with productive conversations

Outside of Model UN, I love paying attention to any and all sports and am an avid twitter microinfluencer. I love playing soccer, listening to music (Frank Ocean), exploring areas around Westwood, and spending countless hours on Clash of Clans. I am also involved with tutoring and enjoy teaching math (LASEO) and SexEd (REACH) to middle and high schoolers. As a pre-med student, I volunteer at the UCLA Medical Center and eventually hope to become an Orthopedic Surgeon with a focus in sports medicine.

In this specialized committee, we will be collectively planning the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which includes choosing a potential host nation, handling television rights, managing worker conditions, and much more! As someone who has followed and understands the importance of the emerging women’s game, I am beyond excited about our topic and can’t wait to hear what you all have to say regarding it.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Tom and I at worldcup@uclamun.org

Sincerely,

Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri

Crisis Director Letter

Greetings Honourable Delegates!

My name is Tom Mekersi and I am blessed to be your Crisis Director for the committee: Behind The Scenes: Planning the Women's FIFA World Cup 2027 at LAMUN XIX!

I am a second year majoring in Political Science. My goal is to graduate with this degree to pursue my education and career in law. I am an international student coming from Nice, France. I moved to the United States and Los Angeles in Fall 2022, prior to starting my education here at UCLA. Outside of academics, I am a big sports fan. I mainly follow football (it’s called football, not soccer!), basketball and Formula 1. I am a member of the UCLA Club Basketball as a team manager. I am also part of a European cultural club, the Eurobruins. My favorite activity at UCLA is hammocking with my sorority big sisters and my fraternity brothers on sunny days!

MUN has always been an important part of my extracurriculars throughout my education. I’ve participated twice as a delegate in an international conference called THIMUN hosted in The Hague, Netherlands. I’ve also participated in my local high school conference three times, once as a delegate and twice as a chair. MUN at UCLA has given me countless opportunities to make friends and improve my research, debate and speaking skills. Last year, I was a staffer for both BruinMUN, our high school conference, and LAMUN. This year, it was my privilege to senior staff BruinMUN and I am thrilled to senior staff LAMUN.

Our committee will ask you, through the realm of sports, to tackle issues that are a major part part of our society, such as but not limited to, dealing with women’s rights and worker conditions and planning a worldwide event while considering the economic, diplomatic and political implication of the decisions you will make throughout our time together. As delegates of this committee you will be challenged to address those matters to the best of your abilities. I truly hope that you will find the topics discussed enriching.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to me through email. I look forward to seeing you all debate those meaningful issues.

Sincerely,

Tom Mekersi

Crisis Director
