International Skating Union: Skating on Thin Ice

Single Delegate Specialized Committee

skating@uclamun.org

Committee Summary

The International Skating Union (ISU) is an international governing body which is responsible for overseeing figure, speed, and synchronized skating. The main purpose of the organization is to centrally organize skating competitions, global scoring guidelines, youth skating, and coordinating with the Olympics. This committee will feature the presidents of many countries’ skating federations and will be focused on growing the sport of skating, while also focusing on more specific issues, such as inconsistent skating scoring and anti-doping regulations. Figure skating is one of the most popular winter sports, however, it lacks much relevance outside of the Olympics and it is up to this committee to come together and devise new competitions, media partnerships, and launch new initiatives in order to make ice skating a sporting mainstay, outside of just the Olympics. Outside of growing skating worldwide, the committee will dive into the intricate issues of athlete health and skating scoring, two of the most pertinent issues faced with skating today. Whether it be over training at a young age or being pressured to dope, most skaters don’t make it past the age of 18 and with recent mounting controversy surrounding the International Judging System, it is clear that major reform is needed in order to take the sport further. It will be up to the delegates to decide which issues to prioritize in order to best grow the scintillating sport!

Meet The Staff

Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri

Chair

Dear Delegates,

Thank you all for coming to LAMUN XX. My name is Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri and I am a third-year Physiological Science major who is also on the pre-med track. I am looking forward to being your chair for the International Skating Union committee this year.

Coming from the Los Angeles area, I first joined Model UN in 9th grade and have loved the social element of it ever since. To me, Model UN is the perfect combination of learning about pertinent world issues while also learning how to most effectively work with others. As your chair, I hope to garner a captivating debate environment filled with productive conversations

Outside of Model UN, I love paying attention to any and all sports and am an avid twitter microinfluencer. I also love playing soccer, listening to music (Frank Ocean), exploring areas around Westwood, and thrifting. I am also involved with tutoring and enjoy teaching math (LASEO) and SexEd (REACH) to middle and high schoolers. As a pre-med student, I volunteer at the UCLA Medical Center and eventually hope to become an Orthopedic Surgeon with a focus in sports medicine.

In this specialized committee, we will focus on growing the well known sport of skating beyond just the Olympics. Delegates will dive into various aspects of growing the sport, ranging from creating a new skating league and managing media partnerships, to maintaining athlete health and creating more consistent scoring guidelines. Similar to most specialized committees at LAMUN, we will be implementing updates and special ROP to continue to keep debate exciting and dynamic. Figure skating is currently one of the most watched sports during the Olympics, but it is far from perfect, so I am so excited to see where all of you take this committee!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me at skating@uclamun.org

Sincerely,

Rohan Ghosh Choudhuri

Lindsay Alvarez

Crisis Director

Hi Delegates!

My name is Lindsay Alvarez and I am so excited to be the Crisis Director for the International Skating Union (ISU) at LAMUN XX! I am currently a second-year student at UCLA, majoring in Human Biology and Society with a minor in Anthropology. I am also on the pre-med track so - alongside consuming considerable amounts of caffeine - you can often find me volunteering at the UCLA Medical Center or spending time in my research lab. Outside of MUN, I love photography, listening to Lizzy McAlpine, hosting rom-com movie nights, spending time with my friends, and exploring areas around Los Angeles or my hometown of Huntington Beach!

My MUN journey began my freshman year of high school, where I learned to develop my public speaking and leadership skills all while learning more about pressing global issues. Even now, I cannot quite comprehend how MUN has helped me grow from a shy, introverted high school freshman to the person now confidently speaking in front of large groups of people. Throughout high school, I had the opportunity to compete at various MUN conferences and I really enjoyed how I was able to meet and interact with so many people through MUN! I knew that I wanted to keep being involved in MUN once I got to college, so I joined MUN at UCLA and have enjoyed it ever since. Last year, I served as a dais staffer for LAMUN’s specialized FIFA Committee, and I am excited to take on the role of CD for ISU this year!

Since its founding in 1892, the International Skating Union has been integral in promoting, organizing, and regulating the sport of skating. Although ISU is involved in both figure and speed skating, we will be focusing on figure skating in this committee. As recognized by the International Olympic Committee, ISU is the federation that deals with a variety of issues, such as increasing the popularity of figure skating, establishing standardized regulations, and securing the safety and health of its skaters. During LAMUN, I am excited to see figure skating taking center stage and how delegates will use proper sportsmanship, diplomacy, and creative ideas to tackle some of ISU’s most pressing issues. Remember, you miss 100% of the shots (or spins, I guess, in this case) you don’t take, so make sure to leave it all on the ice! Please feel free to reach out to me through email if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you all!

Best,

Lindsay Alvarez
