Committee Summary

Taking place in a fantasy setting in a far off realm, two different kingdoms with different sets of values live in close proximity to each other. However, as delegates enter this committee they will be placed in an unprecedented time of strife and unease between the two kingdoms. With expansion on both kingdoms' minds, and tensions rising on the border, this atmosphere gave rise to an enemy that neither had seen before. With territory on both sides being consumed rapidly, and a magical comet that crashes in no-man's land that seemingly grants important boons for the army that captures it, will these kingdoms be able to put their differences aside to fight against the darkness to come, will they perish, or will they try to use these new findings to their respective advantage? Come build the story and the world with us and be a part of this fantastical journey that is sure to be an amazing ride!

Viridian Commonwealth:

The Viridian Commonwealth, a united alliance in the southeastern front of Gha’ru, comprises the Five territories: Summer’s Edge, the Wastelands, Agraria, Sage Glen, and Echowood. Specializing in different fields with distinct cultural centers and industries, these territories each rely upon each other to grow and trade. The Commonwealth’s people value autonomy and economic prosperity, with less emphasis on military and territorial endeavors compared to their northern neighbor: the Cerulean Principality. Their habits of free trade and commerce have made them popular with the neighboring kingdom of Steam Forge. However, this has come at a cost: they lack the military might to properly stand up to the Cerulean Principality, putting them at a distinct disadvantage in their conflict with the Principality. Delegates in this committee must address the complex issues within the Viridian Commonwealth while facing the threat of the growing Principality, debating topics ranging from the environmental consequences of industry, political infighting between the territories, and meteors and magic.

Chair Letter

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to LAMUN XIX! My name is Emiliano Jasis (she/they/he) and I am honored to be your chair for JCC Meteoric Chronicles: Dungeons and Dragons: Viridian Commonwealth.

A little about me: I am a second-year Psychobiology major here at UCLA, hoping to minor in Anthropology. I’m involved in research and multiple clubs on campus (too many, probably). When I’m not cramming my studies or in a club meeting, I enjoy watching anime, trying new foods, and, most of all, exploring new cities! I am originally from East LA, so I grew up exploring much of Southern California. It is in part because of this experience, that I first became involved in Model UN. Engulfed in the rich diversity of Los Angeles, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing a multitude of cultures while learning to be critical of socioeconomic disparities. Over time, I developed a passion for social awareness and, ultimately, geopolitics. For me, Model UN allows me to move forward with this passion—while also making friends from all over the world when traveling! I hope that, in your time at LAMUN, you too will not only enjoy the unique dynamics of this committee, but also make new friends, work towards achieving your personal MUN goals, and gain a taste of the complex, invigorating LA environment!

In this committee, you will be immersed in the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons! Navigating the complex relationships within and between kingdoms, you are tasked with weighing military might and territorial expansion with economic growth and social prosperity–all while protecting the wellness of the people in your kingdom. Moreover, you will learn to advance your personal goals utilizing the novel mechanic of this committee, most accurately emulating the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons. This committee, along with the other joint-committee, will have a fast-paced environment, making for an exciting, competitive, and intense experience. Good luck and it’s time to bring out the lucky dice!

Best Regards,

Emiliano Jasis

Crisis Director Letter

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to LAMUN XIX! My name is Isabella Torriani (she/her) and I’m very excited to be your Crisis Director for JCC Meteoric Chronicles: Dungeons and Dragons: Viridian Commonwealth.

To introduce myself, I’m a second-year Neuroscience and Political Science double major from San Diego, California. From having my Walter White moments in the chemistry labs to conducting constitutional research on the Philippines, my time here at UCLA has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Outside of academics, I play piano and flute in my downtime, enjoy Parts Unknown reruns, and am a massive fan of all things David Bowie. My love for music always somehow translated into updates in my previous BruinMUN and LAMUN committees, so expect to have a musical moment or two in committee sessions!

But enough about me! Dungeons and Dragons is an incredibly unique committee backdrop, combining high fantasy elements with fascinating interpersonal dynamics, high-stakes political tensions, and a plethora of novel mechanics for delegates to enjoy. In this JCC, two kingdoms will clash in a battle for power, wealth, and a chance to become legend as they navigate the treacherous waters of this magical land. I want to encourage each and every one of you to bring your passion, creativity, and wit to this committee. Embrace the allocations you'll be representing, challenge the status quo, and let your diplomatic brilliance shine. If you ever have questions, need guidance, or simply want to share your favorite Bowie song, don't hesitate to reach out. I look forward to seeing how you work together to reconcile your rivalry across committees, and of course, immerse yourselves in the fantasyland we’ve created for you!

Best of luck,

Isabella Torriani

Coordinating Crisis Director Letter

Dear delegates,

My name is Jianhao Cui, and I will be serving as your coordinating crisis director for LAMUN’s Dungeons and Dragons joint crisis committee. I’m currently a third-year pre-law student at UCLA, double majoring in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations and Economics.

I began my MUN journey in my freshman year of college when I was looking for clubs focused on public speaking and international policy, and MUN is the club that I loved the most and stuck with. Since joining, I’ve competed at four conferences, chaired for BruinMUN (our high school conference), and been Crisis Director at MUNSI (UCLA’s MUN summer camp) and LAMUN. This year will be my first time performing the role of coordinating crisis director, and I’m extremely excited to create the best experience possible for this committee.

Outside of MUN, my main hobbies are olympic weightlifting and cooking. I’m part of Barbarian Barbell Club, a gym outside of UCLA; a month before LAMUN I’ll have competed at my first university nationals. Since quarantine, I’ve been cooking all the time and often spend tens of hours prepping for a single dish. Other things about me include my borderline obsession with Pokémon, being the designated tour guide for my friends since I grew up in LA, and building gundams.

I’m looking forward to a lot of lively debate and wild backroom arcs with this JCC. Have fun and we are excited to see you all in April!
